Understanding Autism

What is autism?

Autism affects nearly one in every 59 children. It is a life long developmental brain disorder with a variable outcome ranging from severe, sometimes violent, disruptive and destructive behaviors, serious communication deficits and odd, repetitive, restrictive behaviors. There is no cure. It is predominantly a genetic disorder but there remain many unknowns. We do not yet understand why autism occurs in certain families or why these individuals have such complicated behavioral or mental health conditions.
